SWIMMING INTERVIEW

Who are Swimming & how did this charming band come about?

Thanks. You’re pretty charming yourself. When Jared and I decided to forego our weekly scuba diving lessons and pick up guitars and write watery jams instead we knew we had reached new places where scuba diving just couldn’t take us. An inquisitive room mate Neil overheard the noise and grabbed a spatula and a spoon (for lack of drum sticks) to bang on a drum for some tasty rhythm. This was a little over a year ago now. After playing a few shows as a three-piece, we picked up a bass player to get us lower into the musical abyss. We haven’t gone to scuba practice since.

As simple as it sounds, the name Swimming seems to go hand in hand with your sound, how did it come about?

It was between Swimming and Swim Team actually. Brian vs. Neil. I always thought it was a smoother word and captured the attitude of the music a bit better…sorry Neil.

When swimming ourselves we’re a big fan of the breast stroke, do you have a particular favourite swimming technique or any tips?

I invented a new stroke last week actually. I’m not sure what to call it though. You start with a back stroke and when you bring your hand over your head you then spin your body around so now you’re on your stomach during your standard stroke. However, when you move ahead with the next arm, you spin once more so you’ve returned to the back stroke. So you’re constantly spinning in one direction and utilising two strokes at once. It’s terribly dizzying and is not for the pragmatist. I still don’t know what to call it…maybe “The Sinking Dreidel”.

How would you guys describe your sound in an adjective filled sentence?

Agreeable, happy, lively, relieved, silly, thankful, “charming”—that’s a quote from you—accessible, fun, and why the hell not: juicy.

Has it been a conscience decision to release your music during the summer, it might be raining here in England but your music is a perfect summer soundtrack.

Y’know, not really. When we first got started it was just turning into Spring and we wanted to record the few songs we had right away and that became EP. I wanted to release something this past winter (Feel Not Bad) but we didn’t get a chance to record until December and we just holed up in a lake house for a couple weeks to do that. But the mixing process has taken longer than expected and we’ve been having to make some decisions about the release that is keeping us from letting it out into the world.

We first heard your music with the wonderful self titled EP released last July & you’re now ready to release your album “Feel Not Bad” almost a year later. Do you think you’re sound has changed at all in this time? What’s the album all about?

Unfortunately Feel Not Bad is having to be pushed back quite a while for reasons big and small but we will be releasing a demo of 5-tracks that will be on Feel Not Bad when it finally does arrive. Regardless, the sound has definitely changed. It’s a higher quality of production, and the songs are all more focused.

“Sex,drugs,and Rock n Roll” has long been a cliche within music,what three words would you guys use to describe your music careers so far?

Failure…disappointment….sadness.

Or maybe just Good-Golly Ms. Molly. It’s hyphenated—does that still work?

Are there any new bands that are inspiring you at the moment,or any that have been the soundtrack to your days as growing musicians?

Well booking this tour gave me an opportunity to listen to some fantastic bands that we’ll get to play with here soon enough, and still some that we won’t be performing with but I’ve definitely fallen in love with their sound. The N’ere Dowells (youneredowells.bandcamp.com) from Brooklyn, NY are fantastic and their demo is awesome. Spook Houses (spookhouses.bandcamp.com) from New Jersey are very good, pretty much any band I’ve heard on Evil Weevil Records—check out Hooking Up (hookingup.bandcamp.com) for sure. Then there’s Glass Pennies (glasspennies.bandcamp.com) from Norfolk who are great, Coastal Vision (coastalvision.bandcamp.com) and many others that we’ll have the privilege of playing with this tour. It’s going to be really fun.

We heard you’ve recently won Best Music Video at the Little Rock Film Festival for the wonderful “Some Dreams Come True”, how are you guys feeling about that?

Couldn’t be happier. Alex Penrose did a great job both filming and editing it and now he’s out traveling the country doing what he does best and we wish him the best of luck. He did us a real favor and he was the one who won it, we couldn’t be more proud of our little man.

You’re just about to embark on quite a crazy string of dates for your tour too, is this the most amount of shows you’ve ever done in succession? Any you’re particularly looking forward to?

As a band, yes, this will be our longest string of dates by far. For me, I’m looking forward to the house shows we have scattered along the way. Those performances always feel the best afterwards and people seem to really get into the experience when they’re at a house party rather than a bar. That being said we’ll be playing some killer venues as well and we’re all very happy to have the opportunity. The bands we’ll be playing with are all very nice people who are helping us out immensely. We’ll have fun where ever we are.

Finally, if you could each create anything,for personal or worldwide benefit,what would it be and why?

I’m going to set the bar high and safe by saying enough food to end world hunger for obvious reasons. Joel says a teleporter—a lot of good that’ll do starving children—for space exploration. Joe says a happiness ray gun. Such idealists. Jared says he’d create a massive pizza machine that supplies pizza to the masses.

AMONGST INSPIRATION//PART 4

“In this, the fourth in a series of inspiration led mini-films, we spend a few hours in the studio with artist Paul Hughes.

Dublin painter Paul Hughes has been painting for over 20 years and works out of his studio, an old pig barn on Frascati Park in Dublin. Over the years Paul has built up a very loyal following. It is only in the last 5 or 6 years though that he has publicly exhibited his work.

In January 2009 Paul was invited by the DDDA to hold the first showing of his ‘Absorption’ / Horizon series of work. This exhibition, called ‘Do You Ever Get There’, was a great success and lead to his first solo show in London in June 2009 at the King’s Road Gallery. This show was called ‘Between Two Worlds’.

Paul is also proactive with charities such as Frontline Human Rights Defenders, Sea Change Micro Financing, John Hartnett Stroke Fund and Blackrock Hospice.

Who are All We Are & how did this trio come about?

We are Guro, Rich and Luís, from Norway, Ireland and Brazil respectively, we met at uni and started the band exactly this time last year.

We have a fond similarity with 2/3 of your name, we feel we’re going to get along with your music already. How did the name come about?

The name came after a period when we were disillusioned with our music careers, after trying to do things that didn’t come out quite right. People often mistake it for “All We Were,” “Who Are You,” and “How Are You.”

How would you guys describe your sound in an adjective filled sentence?

Fulfilling-encompassing-dynamic-warm-haunting-psych-tinged-folkish pop.

We heard you’ve been writing in an isolated cabin in a Norwegian forest and recording inside an ancient church? How did that come about?

Our bass player Guro comes from a lovely Norwegian Valley and her family have a cabin by a lake and another by a fjord. The nature around there is absolutely amazing and inspiring, perfect for music-making. The church came about as a good friend was the gardener for the church and suggested it to us!

Do you think these environments had any influence on your music? Would there be any other dream places you would love record in?

They completely influenced our music. A couple of songs are actually about the cabin and mountains around it, and the church ambience defined our performances in those recordings. A dream place to record in would be somewhere by a good beach, we heard there’s a good studio in Hawaii.

Coffee, Coffee & Coffee!

Are there any new bands that are inspiring you at the moment,or any that have been the soundtrack to your days as growing musicians?

Been quite inspired by Metronomy recently, great stuff.

The EP is called “We Hunt”, did the Norweign forest have anything to do with this?

Yeah. Probably not literally (probably) but in a metaphorical way, we are all hunters, it’s in our genes.

You’re very kindly giving away the track “Cardhouse” from the EP for free and we’ve been air drumming to it all week. What’s the track all about?

About loss. In your case, the loss of your drum kit you’ve been air drumming to! The cardhouse is representative of the life you build around someone, it’s tenuous at best and can easily come crashing down at an unexpected moment.

You’ve been gigging around the UK & Europe quite a lot recently, are there any more live shows alongside the EP launch?

Well, we are in the middle of a Norwegian festival as we write this. So playing a few gigs up here an then heading to Germany, playing Kaffe Schokoladen, Fusion Festival the day after, and then the usual gigs in London and Liverpool, and a lovely one in a church in Cambridge, can’t get enough of them.

Finally, if you could each create anything,for personal or worldwide benefit,what would it be and why?

Guro wants to fly, Rich wants a teleporter - anyone can use it for a small royalty. Luís

wants disposable flip-flops to be readily available anywhere.

Jamie Milestone - Founder/Designer at London Undercover

London Undercover – where did it all start?

I had the original idea for the product when I was still at school. I was about 17. I went on to study as a Graphic Designer and ended up working at various branding agencies working with rather large brands. Most of my work was strategic and about positioning product in the market place, working with the consumer in mind and making it work visually. I still had this umbrella idea in the back of my head and soon came to the realisation that I could actually make it work as a brand. The challenge was getting the product right and which was completely new territory and that’s what I was excited about. I literally quit my job and started work on it. I launched the brand just under a year later, going straight into Liberty.

Umbrellas are a more traditional product. Did you ever think that the general public might not be ready for the resurgence of this accessory?

I never really thought about it like that. It all felt very right. The brand started at the beginning of the recession and naturally people start wanting well-made products that will last. It’s as if you need something solid & trustworthy when everything else around you is falling apart. The umbrella at its best is a very beautiful, historical, strong item. It lent itself very well to the Heritage trend that then came along for the same reason. Men were getting smarter and more tailored, moving away from Nike’s to Church’s, G-Shocks to Submariner’s and The Umbrella is one of the next in line as a must-have gentlemen’s accessory. London Undercover introduced itself with some modern relevance and designs that made a lot of sense to own.

Has there been a particular inspiration behind the designs?

The theme of Britain/Britishness runs throughout and it’s all about finding ways of approaching that in a new, interesting way. I try and create concept pieces where you can draw various design cues in each. Giving a range a certain theme in a way that a clothing brand might create it’s collection is also key in differentiating us from other umbrella makers out there. So inspiration is very broad. There’s a very deliberate reference to London Underground within the brand. It’s something that Londoner’s have no choice but to be part of and so there’s that instant familiarity there that I think works nicely.

The brand screams ‘British Heritage’ – what does this phrase mean to you?

It’s a time before your own. It goes beyond nostalgia because you weren’t there, you are only aware of it from what you’ve read, seen in films, or witnessed through grandparents for example. In that sense it’s a very romantic thing. As you grow older you start to view items in a different light. What was once old, basic, boring, soon becomes beautifully simplistic, solid, well-thought out, history in your hands. I think this is why people personally have enjoyed the trend in this country, they can relate to it directly. It will be interesting to see what happens next though. I think modern functionality and the technical side of things will pay a key part in moving forward.

We’ve heard that London Undercover has a growing celebrity clientele. Care to reveal a few of your A-list fans?

Kiefer Sutherland keeps going into one of our stockists in New York and buying up all the LU product they have. Apparently JB is a bit of an umbrella obsessive. Usher is another one who buys in quantity and Rihanna owns a few also… (obviously!).

Your collection continues to go from strength to strength – has there been a stand-out moment so far?

It’s funny because behind the scenes I’ve worked with and continue to work with some of my favourite brands . Brands that I’ve been obsessed with and grown up wearing etc But my stand-out moment was probably when London Transport gave the go-ahead to use the old 78 Misha Black Tube seat pattern. It was before the brand launched and I really needed that design to fit within the range and to connect everything together. It’s always nice though when a brand you admire comes to you though for collaborative purposes and that is always a proud moment.

Where do you see London Undercover in a year’s time?

The brand has really taken off this year. If it can continue to grow in the way it has I’ll be really happy. The pop-up was a great success and so a full-time retail base is key for us. We’re currently working on some new products that will open up the brand - hopefully London Undercover can be a name that more and more people are aware of and want to be part of.
